Summary

When first published in 1899, The Awakening shocked readers with its honest treatment of female marital infidelity。 Audiences accustomed to the pieties of late Victorian romantic fiction were taken aback by Chopin's daring portrayal of a woman trapped in a stifling marriage, who seeks and finds passionate physical love outside the straitened confines of her domestic situation。

Aside from its unusually frank treatment of a then-controversial subject, the novel is widely admired today for its literary qualities。 Edmund Wilson characterized it as a work "quite uninhibited and beautifully written, which anticipates D。 H。 Lawrence in its treatment of infidelity。"

Although the theme of marital infidelity no longer shocks, few novels have plumbed the psychology of a woman involved in an illicit relationship with the perception, artistry, and honesty that Kate Chopin brought to The Awakening。 Now available in this inexpensive edition, it offers a powerful and provocative reading experience to modern readers。

The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation。 The voice of the sea speaks to the soul。 The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace。

Maybe with a leading woman that truly deserves the title "heroine"。 。。。more

“The Awakening” by Kate Chopin ⭐️⭐️⭐️。75My thoughts on this novel have surprisingly changed。 “The Awakening” is a feminist novel from 1899 where the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, “awakens” from the societal norms of her marriage and seeks a life free from society to become her own person。 After 10 years of hating this novel, I’m glad I decided to read it again because I obviously missed the point at 16。 At 16, I was not the feminist I am today therefore I saw this novel as nothing more than a bo “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin ⭐️⭐️⭐️。75My thoughts on this novel have surprisingly changed。 “The Awakening” is a feminist novel from 1899 where the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, “awakens” from the societal norms of her marriage and seeks a life free from society to become her own person。 After 10 years of hating this novel, I’m glad I decided to read it again because I obviously missed the point at 16。 At 16, I was not the feminist I am today therefore I saw this novel as nothing more than a bored house wife who didn’t want to adhere to the life she had。 Now, after my own self discovery, I now look upon Edna with much less disdain。 This novel discusses how women should learn who they are outside of relationships, how to truly be alone with oneself, how to love oneself, how to desire passion from different aspects of life and truly do what makes you happy in a society where it’s rare that one is allowed to do so。The contrasting of the different female characters that Edna comes to know on this road to self discovery just exemplifies that there are many different types of women and that we should respect their choices even if we don’t agree ESPECIALLY when it comes to children。 The discussion of a woman living for her children and sacrificing who she is for them makes me never want to have kids and that’s something I never thought I’d hear myself say。 *S P O I L E R A L E R T*The end of this novel is the part that pissed me off the most 10 years ago。 I hated the fact that Edna killed herself because of a boy and because she couldn’t have what she wanted (this was also during a time when suicide was considered a “sin” in my life)。 Now I see this more so as a warning from Chopin to women as to not allow a man to dictate the decisions of your life。 You should do what you want FOR YOU and not for anyone else。 。。。more

4。5 starsThis book has left me wondering multiple times。 Especially, the ending。Was this really a book about love? No, I don't think so。 This was a book about indipendence and self discovery。 It was obviously considered scandalous for the time in which it has been written, but I'd take a bet that many 'modern' readers too might still consider it the same。And that ending! Very interesting。 It's kind of Hardy's Tess, well her relationship struggles, but also contains the feminism portrayed in Ibsen's A doll's House。The novel deals with Edna, a woman married into a Creole family, and her relationships with an array of different men and women。 Edna experiences intense emotions and feelings which she struggles to cope with。Over all I thoroughly enjoyed this, but didn't love it。 100% worth a read though :) Very interesting。 It's kind of Hardy's Tess, well her relationship struggles, but also contains the feminism portrayed in Ibsen's A doll's House。The novel deals with Edna, a woman married into a Creole family, and her relationships with an array of different men and women。 Edna experiences intense emotions and feelings which she struggles to cope with。Over all I thoroughly enjoyed this, but didn't love it。 100% worth a read though :) 。。。more

This is definitely a melodramatic story, but so well-written I enjoyed it a great deal。 The synopsis is misleading in the fact that the married woman protagonist, though she has romantic relationships, never sexually consummates them。 That would likely have invoked the scorn of many readers of that era。 Chopin illustrates the awful position of a woman who fell in love outside her marriage, much as Tolstoy did with Anna Karenina。
